WEEK 3

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

                                               William Ernest Henley
                                                                1849 - 1903

After suffering tuberculosis as a boy, Henley found himself, in 1874, aged twenty-five, an inmate of the hospital at Edinburgh. From there he sent to the Cornhill Magazine where he wrote poems in irregular rhythms, describing with poignant force his experiences in hospital.

Letting Go.

Brain Research shows the hardest thing for the brain to do, is to let go of thoughts.

For this reason, cultivating the attitude of letting go, or non-attachment, is fundamental to the practice of mindfulness. When we start paying attention to our inner experience, we rapidly discover that there are certain thoughts and feelings and situations that the mind seems to want to hold on to.

Noticing the tendency to judge and to recognize it creates a type of veil that doesn't allow us to see things the way they are, rather than how we would like to see them. Crafting the fine art of discernment allows us to pierce through that veil of judgement and see what is real. What is truth. From this place of truth we find a state of Peace.
